In September of 2024, it was reported that a driver had lost their life after striking a horse on the 15 Freeway. In addition, another individual (presumably a passenger) suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. The horse reportedly went straight through the windshield, causing catastrophic injuries to the vehicle’s occupants. For reference, the average horse weighs well over 1,000 pounds.
The real question is obvious: How did this horse end up on the road? Authorities say that the horse was initially traveling in a trailer, and it got loose when the driver towing the trailer hit a guardrail. The horse then traversed the highway and reached the median before attempting to cross the entire freeway. It was at this point the animal was struck and killed by the victim’s vehicle.
There is no word on what caused the first driver to crash into the guardrail – but this could become a relevant factor in a later personal injury lawsuit. As numerous observers have pointed out, a trailer does not simply crash into a guardrail for no reason. This seems to have been a single-vehicle crash – and it is not clear why the driver lost control. According to other reports, this initial crash sparked numerous collisions – and a semi-truck later crashed into the back of the immobilized trailer.
